The Taiwan Fund, Inc. Announces 3rd Quarter Earnings

NEW YORK, July 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Taiwan Fund, Inc. (the "Fund") (NYSE: TWN) announced today details regarding its investment performance for the three month period ended May 31, 2018.

The Fund reported a net asset value per share of $23.90 as of the close of business on May 31, 2018. This represents an increase of $0.03 per share from the net asset value per share of $23.87 reported on Feb 28, 2018. The Fund's share price, as traded on the New York Stock Exchange on May 31, 2018, was $20.68, representing a discount to net asset value of 13.47%. This represents a decrease of $0.30 per share from the share price of $20.98 on February 28, 2018, which represented a discount to net asset value of 12.11%. The Fund had a total return of 0.13% for the three months ended May 31, 2018 based on the change in its net asset value. For the same period the TAIEX Total Return Index returned -1.92% (in US$ terms).

For the nine month period, the Fund's net asset value per share decreased $0.21 per share from the net asset value per share of $24.11 reported on August 31, 2017.  For the nine month period ended May 31, 2018, the share price, as traded on the NYSE, decreased $0.69 per share from the share price of $21.37 reported on August 31, 2017.  The Fund had a total return of 2.17% for the nine month period ended May 31, 2018 based on the change of its net asset value. For the same period the TAIEX Total Return Index returned 3.22% (in US$ terms).

For the three month period ended May 31, 2018, the Fund had net realized gains of $17,220,694 on investments and foreign currency transactions and a decrease in net unrealized appreciation of $11,441,396 on investments and foreign currency transactions.  The Fund's net investment loss (consisting of dividend and interest income less operating expenses) for the same period was $2,243,507.
