TEGNA Stations ABC10, KING and KARE Nominated for Peabody Awards

TEGNA Inc. (NYSE: TGNA) today announced that ABC10, its ABC affiliate in Sacramento, KING 5, its NBC affiliate in Seattle, and KARE 11, its NBC affiliate in Minneapolis, have been nominated for Peabody Awards, which honor the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and streaming media during 2020. Out of four local television/digital news organizations receiving nominations, TEGNA stations received three out of four nominations.

In the News category, KXTV/ABC10 was nominated for “FIRE-POWER-MONEY: Holding PG&E Accountable,” an examination of the connection between deadly wildfires, PG&E and its influence on California politics. The ABC10 Originals unit is led by executive producer Gonzalo Magana, with FIRE-POWER-MONEY reporter Brandon Rittiman, photojournalist and editor Tyler Horst, photojournalist and editor Victor Nieto, producer Mike Bunnell and engagement producer Sabrina Sanchez. Additional support was provided by Hugh Gaskill in marketing and the ABC10 digital team led by Geoff Dietrich.

Also in the News category, KARE 11 was nominated for “KARE 11 Investigates: Cruel & Unusual,” an investigation into preventable deaths, botched investigations, falsified records, and a suicide crisis in Minnesota jails. The KARE 11 Investigates unit is led by reporters A. J. Lagoe and Brandon Stahl, photojournalists Gary Knox and Jason Steussy and executive producer Steve Eckert. Additional KARE 11 support came from photographers Lee Wall and Craig Norkus with graphic support from KARE 11 creative director Travis Kobs and TEGNA Design Tank designer Jeremy Carlisle.

In the Public Service category, KING 5 was nominated for “Facing Race,” a multi-part series that explores issues of racial injustice and inequality in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. The "Facing Race" team includes executive producer Christin Ayers, anchor/host Joyce Taylor, reporter Taylor Mirfendereski, producer Keely Walker, senior digital producer Allison Sundell, video editor Kevin Glantz, content editor Susannah Frame, and photojournalists Ryan Beard and Michael Botsford. Dozens of KING 5 reporters, photojournalists, technical staff, and marketing team members also contributed to the series.
