Asta Funding is a diversified financial services company that assists consumers and serves investors through the strategic management of our four complementary businesses. Founded in 1994, Asta began operations as a subprime auto lender. The company went public in 1995. While many subprime auto lenders did not succeed, Asta completed two successful $25 million securitizations through Greenwich Capital Markets. In March 1999, the company exited the subprime auto lending market and purchased a $1.3 billion portfolio of charged-off assets from a major bank for $53 million, with the backing of Greenwich Capital. Then, as now, Asta’s management relied on its vast experience in the consumer receivables market. As the company grew, Asta gained recognition by correctly evaluating portfolios with a keen understanding of the underlying cycles of consumer behavior in a changing economy. Since becoming a public company in 1995, Asta has purchased almost $32 billion in face value of debt portfolios, making Asta one of the largest debt buyers in the United States. In 2010 Asta made the strategic decision to exit the U.S. market for distressed consumer receivables, seeking instead to bring its financial acumen to a broader, more diversified set of businesses. Asta’s U.S.-based business lines today promote claims on funds that protect the daily living standards of the injured, settlement recipients, the disabled and veterans.
